What is Owlypia?

Owlypia is an international platform that empowers students aged 9–18 to develop their soft skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, and communication through engaging academic challenges. Students can participate in various rounds (Online, Local, or Regional) and qualify for Owlypia Globals, an international event that celebrates creativity, collaboration, and intellectual exploration.

Who can participate?

Students aged 9 to 18 from anywhere in the world can participate in Owlypia. Participants are grouped into three age categories:

  • Owlins (ages 9–11)
  • Owlets (ages 12–14)
  • Owlys (ages 15–18)

Age is determined based on the student's age on September 1st of the current academic year. All participants should have a good command of English and an interest in building their soft skills and academic potential.

Which subjects does Owlypia cover?

Owlypia features five exciting subject areas. Students choose one when registering and explore that subject in both individual and team-based challenges:

How can I access the study materials?

Once students create an account, they can access introductory materials on the Owlypia LMS (Learning Management System). After registering for a specific round, they unlock detailed study materials, all accessible through their LMS dashboard.

Does each student get an individual account?

Yes. Each student must create an account using their own email address. This account provides access to:

  • Competition registration
  • Event schedules and venue details
  • Study materials
  • Certificates and medal results
  • Any discount codes earned

How can students balance Owlypia with schoolwork?

Owlypia is designed to compliment students' schoolwork, not replace it. The program helps students build essential life skills while diving deeper into subjects they enjoy. Many students prepare in just 2 to 6 weeks, using flexible, self-paced study plans.

What do students gain from participating in Owlypia competitions?

Owlypia gives students a platform to:

  • Strengthen soft skills like communication, collaboration, and creativity
  • Explore potential academic or career interests
  • Gain confidence through international competition
  • Earn recognition, medals, and participation certificates

Whether they win or not, students walk away more curious, capable, and confident.

What is Linguaowl?

Linguaowl is Owlypia's personalized English proficiency test. It evaluates core language skills and helps students identify their strengths and areas for improvement. It's a free diagnostic tool available to all participants at the beginning of their Owlypia journey.

What is "Owlypia Online"?

Owlypia Online is an international competition where students aged 9–18 test their knowledge in one of five subject areas. The exam is taken fully online and open to students worldwide.

How do I sign up for the Online Round?

Students can register through the Owlypia student or supervisor portal. The participation fee is £20, and registration is open until one week before the scheduled exam dates.

Do I have to choose a favorite subject?

Yes. During the registration process, each student selects one favourite subject.

What type of questions are asked?

All questions are multiple choice, based solely on your chosen subject.

How many questions are there, and how long is the test?

There are 90 questions, and students have 90 minutes to complete the test.

What happens if my internet is disconnected in the middle of the test?

Your test will resume from where you left off once you reconnect. However, the timer does not pause, you still have 90 minutes total from when you started the test. It is the student's responsibility to ensure a stable internet connection during the exam.

Is the awarding per age or for an age group?

Awards are given by subject area and within each age category (Owlin: 9–11, Owlet: 12–14, Owly: 15–18).

What are the awards?

The Top 225 students are awarded based on their rankings in each subject and age group.

  • If a student wins multiple prizes across different competitions, only the highest-ranking award can be used.
  • Discounts are based on the fee at the time of the award, not the original registration.
  • Students who qualify through Owlypia Online are eligible to participate in Owlypia Globals.
  • If a student qualifies through both Online and Local rounds, they must use the higher award within the designated deadline.
How can I get my certificates?

All participation and achievement certificates are sent by email to both students and their supervisors within one week of the competition.

What is an "Owlypia Local" Round?

Owlypia Locals are two-day, intellectually stimulating competitions based on team challenges for students in three age groups:

  • Owlins (ages 9–11)
  • Owlets (ages 12–14)
  • Owlys (ages 15–18)

Owlypia Locals are hosted either onsite or virtually and take place in different countries around the world.

When and where do Owlypia Locals take place?

What are the challenges in Owlypia Locals?

There are four team-based challenges:

  • Knowledge Challenge
  • Speech-Craft Challenge
  • Impromptu Challenge
  • Team Spirit Challenge

All teams must participate in all four challenges.

How many students form a team?

Each team consists of three students. In exceptional cases, a team may compete with two members, although this may be a disadvantage in some challenges.

A single student may register, but they are responsible for forming or joining a team.

Can team members be from different age groups?

No. All team members must be from the same age category.

Can team members choose different favourite subjects?

Yes! Team members can choose the same or different favourite subjects; it's completely up to them.

Can we form a team with students from different schools?

Yes, you certainly can! Teams can be formed with students from different schools and/or countries. It can also help you start new friendships!

What should I do if I would like to participate in an Owlypia Local but I don't have a team?

If you're missing one or two members, please email us at info@owlypia.org and we'll do our best to help you find teammates.

Do I need a supervisor?

Although students can attend without a supervisor, it is strongly recommended that teams be accompanied by a responsible adult during Owlypia Locals.

What is the role of supervisors?

Supervisors:

  • Support and guide their teams throughout the competition.
  • Ensure students are aware of the rules and event schedule.
  • Are expected to act as judges during the challenges (if they have a good command of English and are not exempted).
  • Liaise with Owlypia organisers to help the event run smoothly.
Do supervisors have to pay?

No. Supervisors do not pay any participation fees for Owlypia Locals.

What are the awards?
  • All participants receive an international certificate of participation.
  • Achievement certificates, medals, and trophies are awarded to top-performing teams.
  • The Top 3 teams in the Owlets and Owlys categories receive a 20%, 15%, and 10% discount, respectively, for an upcoming Owlypia Global, as long as they register within 30 days of the Local event.

Note: If a student wins prizes from multiple competitions (e.g., Owlypia Online and Local), only the higher discount can be used within the deadline.

How and when will I receive my certificates?

Participation certificates are handed out during the event.

Achievement certificates are emailed to supervisors within 2–3 weeks after the competition.

What are the costs of participation?

You may visit the Owlypia Locals registration page to see the fees for each local event.

Who judges the challenges?

Academics, educators, and accompanying supervisors who are pre-trained by Owlypia to serve as judges during the event.

What is an "Owlypia Global" Round?

Owlypia Global Round is a six-day intellectually challenging competition where students participate in both individual and team-based challenges. The competition is open to students in three age groups:

  • Owlins (ages 9–11)
  • Owlets (ages 12–14)
  • Owlys (ages 15–18)

Owlypia Globals are hosted at prestigious institutions in inspiring locations around the world.

Is there any prerequisite to participate in Owlypia Globals?

Yes. All participants must first receive a medal certificate from:

  • an Owlypia Online competition, or
  • a medal from an Owlypia Local round

to qualify for participation in Owlypia Globals.

What are the challenges in Owlypia Globals?

Students compete in the following six challenges:

  • Knowledge Challenge
  • Pen Down Challenge
  • Speech-Craft Challenge

Can the students in the same team choose different favourite subjects?

Yes! Team members can choose the same or different favourite subjects, whatever works best for them.

What should I do if I would like to participate in Team Challenges but don't have a team?

No worries! If you are missing one or two teammates, please email us at info@owlypia.org and we'll do our best to help you form a team.

Do I need a supervisor?

Yes, all participants must be accompanied by a supervisor during Owlypia Globals.

Is accommodation provided?

We offer two participation packages:

  • Basic Package – Does not include accommodation
  • Add-On Package – Includes accommodation at a university facility (twin room), meals, and airport transfers
Who judges the challenges?

Academics, educators and accompanying supervisors who are trained in advance by the Owlypia team.
